Why Virtual Assistants have To Niche In 2026 & Beyond

May 21, 20262 min read

It used to be ok to be a generalist VA, not perfect, but ok. In fact, some people wanted general VAs without the complexities of marketing and tech offerings, but that's all changed now.

With more and more virtual assistants, social media managers, and online business managers flooding the freelance space, it's harder than ever for potential clients to find what they're looking for.

I know, it seems odd, right? Surely with more choice finding the support you need would be easy. Well, that's not actually true and here's why. As a generalist virtual assistant, telling people I can help with "Dubsado and a bit of everything to be honest", is nowhere near as strong as "I'm a Dubsado specialist".

In that instance, who do you think a client will want to work with, if what they're looking for, is a Dubsado expert? Certainly not someone that sounds a bit unsure, a bit flaky. They want the person who looks strong, who is telling them straight off the bat, this is my arena, this is what I am good at.

Niching isn't about putting yourself in a cage and limiting who you work with, it's opening the door to more opportunities. Other clients will understand that beyond Dubsado (sorry to keep using that example), you can do a lot more. They'll still reach out to you despite the fact you really only talk about this one problem you can solve.

The other great thing about niching, is that when you start to get the right clients, they'll find it easier to refer you to people they know. And not just for the thing you help them with. You see, niching is like your shop front. When you step inside the door though, there's other things on the shelf for sale.

So, once you start working with a client who initially came to you because of your niche, you can start showing them what else you can do and that's what they'll tell people about.

Make sense?
